Connect an editor
Open the server's files in VS Code or Cursor over SSH, and give Herdr a full-size terminal inside the editor.
Herdr handles the agents. For reading code and diffs, an editor helps. VS Code and Cursor can both open a folder on the server over SSH. The editor window runs on your laptop, while the files, terminals, and builds stay on the VPS.
Both use the agent-cloud shortcut from your ~/.ssh/config, so there is nothing extra to set up on the server.
Pick your interface
| Interface | How to connect |
|---|---|
| Terminal | Run ssh agent-cloud. Enough for Git, the agents, and Herdr |
| VS Code | Install Microsoft's Remote - SSH extension, then connect to agent-cloud |
| Cursor | Choose Connect via SSH and select agent-cloud |
In VS Code or Cursor, press Cmd+Shift+P (Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux), run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host, and pick agent-cloud. Then open the folder /home/developer/repositories/project-one. The file tree, editor, and Git view now show the server's copy.
A large terminal for Herdr
Herdr needs space. In the remote editor window:
- Choose Terminal, then New Terminal. It opens on the server.
- Click the upward chevron at the top right of the terminal panel. Its tooltip reads Maximize Panel Size.
- Press Cmd+B (Ctrl+B on Windows and Linux) to hide the sidebar.
- Run
herdr.
Click the same chevron, now Restore Panel Size, to get the editor back. Cmd+J (Ctrl+J) shows and hides the panel but does not maximize it.
Check
The editor's integrated terminal shows developer for whoami, and herdr opens the same workspaces you started from a plain terminal.
