Getting started
Cloud coding workspace
Run Claude Code and Codex in Herdr on your own Hostinger VPS, limit SSH to your own IP address, and reconnect to the same agent sessions from your laptop.
A coding agent in a local terminal stops when your laptop sleeps. Close the lid halfway through a long task and the task stops with it. This guide moves the agents to a server. You connect over SSH, start Claude Code and Codex inside Herdr, disconnect, and later reconnect to the same sessions.
Dave built this setup on a Hostinger VPS that ships with Herdr preinstalled. The guide accompanies a Hostinger collaboration for Dave Ebbelaar's YouTube channel, and it covers every step from an empty VPS subscription to daily use.
How it fits together
Your laptop only shows the terminal. The VPS runs Herdr, and Herdr keeps the agent panes alive when the SSH connection drops. The models still run at Anthropic and OpenAI, so your Claude and ChatGPT plans stay separate from the server bill.
What you will set up
- A VPS with the Herdr template, reachable with an SSH key that only your laptop holds.
- A daily user without admin rights, so the agents never run as root.
- A firewall that accepts SSH from one IP address and drops everything else.
- GitHub CLI, Claude Code, and Codex, logged in on the server.
- One Herdr workspace per repository, and a daily routine from a terminal, VS Code, or Cursor.
What you need
You need a Hostinger VPS plan. Dave used KVM 2, which has 2 vCPUs, 8 GB of RAM, and 100 GB of disk. Use the code DAVEVPS at checkout for 10% off. The code works on your first purchase with a yearly plan, and the yearly plan is the best deal. You can reuse the same VPS for other projects too. On your laptop you need OpenSSH, which macOS, Linux, and Windows 10 or later already include.
For the agents you need a Claude plan, a ChatGPT plan with Codex access, and a GitHub account. The firewall step works best with a fixed public IP address from a VPN or your internet provider. Without one, you can skip that page and rely on SSH keys alone.
Versions
Written with Ubuntu 26.04, Herdr 0.9.1, Claude Code 2.1.280, Codex 0.156.1, and GitHub CLI 2.46.0. Dave works on macOS. Commands you run on your laptop have a macOS and Linux tab and a Windows tab, for PowerShell on Windows 10 or later. After ssh agent-cloud, every command runs on the Ubuntu server, so it is the same on every laptop.
If you want to set up Herdr on your own machine instead, the Herdr setup guide covers the local version with Dave's config files.
